CHC STATEMENT ON PRESIDENT’S STATE OF THE UNION ADDRESS

(Washington, DC) - Today, Congressman Charles A. Gonzalez (TX-20,) Chairman of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, issued the following statement in response to the President’s State of the Union Address:

“In meetings with the President and his staff, and again today in his State of the Union Address, it is clear that the Administration’s priorities- creating jobs, investing in education, and promoting innovation and global competitiveness - are not only what’s best for our country , but what’s best for the Hispanic community.

Latinos in the United States are among the most innovative members of our society. Whether you look at Hispanic-owned small businesses or Hispanic participation in key industries such as the manufacturing or construction industries, their success is intricately tied to our country’s success. Latinos are also the youngest ethnic group in the United States and depend on public education more than others. The educational investments the President outlined are, again, critical for the future of the Latino community, and for the future of our country. And the President also addressed the need to reform our broken immigration system in a way that not only benefits our economy, but a way that is consistent with our values as a nation.

Tonight, the President provided our country with a blueprint for growth, and a vision for a future that we’ll be proud to pass on to future generations. As the President said “we measure progress by the success of our people.” The Hispanic community is poised and ready to progress, and their success, is America’s success.”

“En reuniones que he tenido con el presidente y con miembros de su administración, y hoy en su discurso del Estado de la Unión, queda claro que las prioridades de esta administración – crear trabajos, invertir en la educación, y promover la innovación y la competencia global- no son solamente lo mejor para el país, si no lo mejor para la comunidad latina.

La comunidad latina en los Estados Unidos es una de las más innovadoras. Si vemos la cantidad de negocios pequeños hispanos, o el porcentaje de latinos que trabajan en industrias claves como en el área de construcción y fabricación, su éxito está ligado al éxito del país. Los latinos también son la población más joven del país, y dependen más en la educación pública. Las inversiones en nuestro sistema educativo que delineo el presidente son esenciales para el futuro de la comunidad latina y, de nuevo, para el futuro de todo el país. Y el presidente también hablo de la necesidad de reformar nuestro sistema migratorio de una manera que no solo beneficie a nuestra economía, si no que sea consistente con los valores de nuestra nación.

Esta noche, el presidente nos presentó un plan para crecer y mejorar a nuestra nación. Nos presento una visión de un futuro que estaremos orgullosos de heredarles a nuestros hijos, y a nuestros nietos. Como dijo el presidente ‘el progreso se mide con el éxito de nuestra gente.’ La comunidad hispana está lista para progresar, y su éxito, es el éxito de los Estados Unidos.”
