CHC on Supreme Court Decision on Shelby County v. Holder

June 25, 2013

Washington D.C.: Today, CHC Chairman Rubén Hinojosa (TX-15) released the following statement in response to the Supreme Court's decision to invalidate the coverage formula

"Today's decision by the Supreme Court to invalidate a key component of the Voting Rights Act is a major setback for all Americans. Since its inception, the VRA has protected the ability of every American to make their voice heard in the voting booth, and it is especially critical to the Latino community.

"Latino voters are the fastest growing segment of the United States electorate and have been consistently targeted by jurisdictions for the expressed purpose of diluting our collective power in the voting booth. In the 2012 election an estimated 10% of votes were cast by Latinos and that number will continue to surge with 50,000 Latinos becoming eligible to vote every month.

"As the Supreme Court noted, voting discrimination still exists. It is time for all of us - voters, civic leaders and elected officials - to come together and address this issue as a nation. The Congressional Hispanic Caucus is committed to working with a bipartisan coalition in Congress to develop a coverage formula that satisfies the Court and protects all of America's voters. "
