CHC on Supreme Court Decision in Fisher vs. University of Texas

June 24, 2013

Washington D.C.: Today, CHC Chairman Rubén Hinojosa (TX-15) and CHC Education Task Force Chair Raúl Grijalva released the following statement regarding the Supreme Court's decision in Fisher vs. University of Texas.

"Today's decision by the Supreme Court in Fisher vs. University of Texas affirms the importance of a diverse student body at our nation's universities," said CHC Chairman Rubén Hinojosa. "Today, one in four public elementary school students are Hispanic. It is critical for the future of our nation that these students have equal opportunity in college admissions. We firmly believe the University of Texas's admissions policy is fair and are confident it will ultimately be ruled constitutional."

“The Supreme Court today found affirmative action a necessary and useful tool," said CHC Education Task Force Chair Raúl Grijalva. "The ruling affirms the need for affirmative action and leaves necessary programs in place, which I believe is a fair and just result. The decision directs universities to make all efforts to increase diversity without relying exclusively on affirmative action, and does say that if else fails affirmative action is an appropriate method to reach that crucial goal. This was a positive outcome for the country and an important victory for the rule of law over misinformation.”

The Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC), founded in December 1976, is organized as a Congressional Member organization, governed under the Rules of the U.S. House of Representatives. The CHC is dedicated to voicing and advancing, through the legislative process, issues affecting Hispanics in the United States, Puerto
Rico and U.S. Territories.
