CHC ON JULIÁN CASTRO NOMINATION

Washington, DC- Today, Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC) Chairman Rubén Hinojosa (TX-15), and Members of the CHC released the following statements on President's Obama nomination of San Antonio Mayor Julián Castro to serve as the next Secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development.

"San Antonio Mayor Julián Castro is an excellent choice by President Obama to serve as the next Secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development. We are confident that he will be a strong voice for fair and affordable housing, urban development, and America's families. As a fellow Texan, it gives me great pride to see this exceptional Latino leader serve our country on a national level. We congratulate Mayor Castro and his family, and we urge the Senate to act swiftly on his nomination," said Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC) Chairman Rubén Hinojosa.

"I congratulate Julián Castro on his nomination to serve as Secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development. His strong record of leadership and commitment to expanding opportunity for hard-working and middle-class families as Mayor of San Antonio will serve him well in this important Cabinet position. I urge the Senate to move swiftly on this nomination of a dedicated and talented public servant," said Congressman Ben Ray Luján, CHC First Vice Chair and Diversity Task Force Chair (NM-03).

“President Obama has made an excellent choice in nominating Mayor Julián Castro to be the next Secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development. Mayor Castro’s leadership has put the city of San Antonio on a new trajectory by refocusing on building infrastructure and revitalizing the city’s underserved urban communities. Mayor Castro has emerged as a champion of American business and residential renewal. He deserves speedy Senate confirmation so he can hit the ground running as our next Secretary of HUD,” said Congressman Xavier Becerra (CA-34), Chairman of the House Democratic Caucus.

“I am thrilled by Mayor Julián Castro’s nomination as our next HUD Secretary. In his three terms as Mayor of San Antonio, he has proven himself an exceptionally thoughtful and talented executive. His economic development and housing policies have improved the lives of San Antonio’s residents, including the city’s large Latino population. His thorough understanding of the housing and economic challenges in our country, as well as his record of results, will make him an excellent HUD Secretary and an effective advocate for Latinos, and all Americans, in President Obama’s cabinet.
