CHC ON CELEBRATION OF CINCO DE MAYO
Washington D.C.: Today, CHC Chairman Charles A. Gonzalez (TX-20) and members of the CHC released the following statement in celebration of Cinco de Mayo, which commemorates the historic Battle of Puebla, when the outnumbered Mexican military triumphed over the French Army in 1862:
“Cinco de Mayo marks a special occasion for the 31.8 million Mexican-Americans in our country, both as a celebration of heritage and also as a reminder that every person strives for freedom and an opportunity to build a better life. I’m proud to celebrate the importance of this date and the significance of the Battle of Pueba, as well as recognize the rich contributions Mexican-Americans continue to make to our nation.
“There’s no doubt that Mexican-Americans are playing a big role in making America a strong and successful country. From the 685,000 Mexican-American veterans who served our country in uniform, to the 1 million Mexican-American business owners building our economy, the Hispanic community plays a significant role in shaping the America that we live in today. I’m honored to recognizing these contributions and call on all Americans to join me in celebrating Cinco de Mayo.”

El líder del Caucus Hispano del Congreso Charles A. González (TX - 20) hizo las siguientes declaraciones celebrando el Cinco de Mayo, fecha que conmemora la histórica Batalla de Puebla, cuando el ejército Mexicano triunfó sobre el numeroso ejército Francés en 1862:
"El Cinco de Mayo es una fecha especial para los 31.800.000 México-americanos en nuestro país, tanto como una celebración de la herencia y también como un recordatorio de que cada persona se esfuerza por su libertad y la oportunidad de construir una vida mejor. Estoy orgulloso de celebrar la importancia de esta fecha y el significado de la Batalla de Puebla, como también poder reconocer las grandes contribuciones que los México-americanos siguen haciendo a nuestra nación.
"No hay duda de que los México-americanos juegan un papel muy importante en hacer que los Estados Unidos sea un país fuerte y exitoso. Desde los 685.000 veteranos estadounidenses de origen mexicano que han servido a nuestro país, a el millón de propietarios de negocios estadounidenses de origen mexicano que levantan nuestra economía, la comunidad hispana sigue jugando un papel trascendental en la formación de la América en la que vivimos hoy en día. Me siento honrado de reconocer estas contribuciones e invito a todos los estadounidenses a unirse en la celebración del Cinco de Mayo.”

"We are truly blessed in this great country to have such a rich mix of cultures. Growing up in South Texas I was fortunate to be exposed to the wonderful influences of our neighbor Mexico. We embraced our Latino heritage and celebrated Cinco de Mayo each year to commemorate the Battle of Puebla Mexico when Mexican troops defeated the invading French army. The battle's hero, General Ignacio Seguin Zaragoza was born in Goliad, Texas. On the 150 year anniversary of the battle, we also celebrate the achievements made by Hispanics in the United States of America. We are teachers, doctors, astronauts, authors, artists, economists, judges, generals, and public servants. The list goes on and on, and so will we."

“As we remember the Mexican troops’ triumph at the Battle of Puebla on this Cinco de Mayo, we also reflect that our country and Mexico share much more than a border. The U.S. and Mexico have deep historical and cultural ties, and our trade with this important neighbor sustains six million jobs in the U.S., making our relationship with Mexico vital to our own economic prosperity. I hope you will join me in celebrating this special day for Mexicans and Mexican-Americans, and I wish everyone a very happy Cinco de Mayo.”
