CHC MEETS WITH EMBASSIES ON UNACCOMPANIED MINORS ISSUE

June 18, 2014

Washington, DC- Today, the Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC) met with the Ambassador of El Salvador and representatives from the embassies of Guatemala, Honduras and Mexico over the unaccompanied minors issue. CHC Chairman Rubén Hinojosa (TX-15) released the following statement on today's meeting.

"We had a very productive meeting today with the Ambassador of El Salvador and embassy representatives from Guatemala, Honduras and Mexico. Unequivocally, we are all deeply concerned about the unaccompanied children traveling to the U.S. - Mexico border. The journey these minors undertake is extremely dangerous and we join embassy officials in discouraging families from putting their children in harm's way.

"During the meeting, CHC Members heard from embassy representatives about the root causes driving this migration of minors. Everyone agreed that this is a complex problem that must be dealt with regionally, and embassy officials stated that this problem is not the result of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA).

"It is crucial that we do not turn our backs on Latin America during this crisis. The Congressional Hispanic Caucus will continue working with officials from these countries and with the Administration on ways to find a comprehensive and immediate solution to this situation," said CHC Chairman Rubén Hinojosa.
