CHC CHAIRWOMAN CELEBRATES BLACK HISTORY MONTH

February 9, 2015

Washington, DC- Today, Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC) Chairwoman Linda Sánchez released the following video in honor of Black Heritage Month.

FULL REMARKS

Hello, I'm Linda Sánchez, Chair of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus.

Every February, we as a nation come together to celebrate Black History Month and recognize the contributions of the African American community.

From the arts, to math and sciences, and all the way to the White House, African Americans continue to pave the way in high-profile leadership positions.

Like the Latino community, the African American community has a legacy of fighting for civil rights, middle class and family values, and a commitment to build a stronger America for generations to come.

This year, we mark the 50th anniversary of the Voting Rights Act.

With the Supreme Court's decision in 2013 to dismantle the Voting Rights Act, states and cities with a history of racial discrimination don't have to prove their new voting laws are not discriminatory.

Many states have also recently passed voter identification laws that make it harder for Americans to exercise their constitutional right to vote.

The assaults we see are not only an attack on minority communities, but also an attack on our democracy.

Let us honor Black History Month by fighting to restore voting rights protections, eliminating wealth disparities, and creating economic opportunities for all Americans.
