CHC CHAIRMAN HINOJOSA ON CINCO DE MAYO

May 5, 2014

Washington, DC- Today, Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC) Chairman Rubén Hinojosa (TX-15) released the following statement in honor of Cinco de Mayo, a holiday that commemorates the Mexican army's victory over French forces.

"Cinco de Mayo is an opportunity to remember Mexico's victory over French forces in the Battle of Puebla. On this day, we celebrate Mexico's rich history and the contributions Mexican-Americans make to our country.

With 33.7 million people of Mexican descent, Mexican-Americans make up the largest Hispanic group in the United States. They have long contributed to the fabric of our nation, from serving in Congress to defending our country overseas and laboring in the fields to produce the food we eat. Our Mexican-American community enriches our country both culturally and economically.

On this Cinco de Mayo, I call on Speaker John Boehner to honor the contributions of Mexican-Americans and Latinos by allowing a vote on comprehensive immigration reform, an issue of great importance to Latinos in this country. Enough is enough. House Republican Leadership must stop standing in the way of a permanent fix to our nation's broken immigration system."

CHC Chairman Rubén Hinojosa and Members of the CHC will be in attendance at various Cinco de Mayo celebrations today hosted by Vice President Joe Biden, President Barack Obama and the Mexican Embassy.
