CHC CHAIRMAN HINOJOSA CELEBRATES BLACK HISTORY MONTH

February 10, 2014

Washington, DC- Today, Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC) Chairman Rubén Hinojosa (TX-15) released the following remarks in honor of Black History Month, which is celebrated during the month of February.

FULL REMARKS

"The month of February is known as Black History Month, a time during which we honor and celebrate the contributions of the African American community. One of today's forefront leaders is Congresswoman Marcia L. Fudge, who chairs the Congressional Black Caucus. I would like to recognize my colleague at this time for her extraordinary leadership and persistence on issues that disproportionately affect minorities. In particular, I thank Chairwoman Fudge for her work on voting rights and reducing income inequality.

The fight for civil rights in our country has long been led by African Americans leaders. Past and present leaders like Rosa Parks, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and my colleague Congressman John Lewis made enormous sacrifices so that the United States could be a more fair and just country. We thank our nation's African American leaders for ensuring that Americans of all backgrounds have access to greater freedoms, justice and equality.

There are many shared experiences and struggles between the Latino and African American communities. Both communities share a legacy of fighting for civil rights, a focus on family values, and commitment to build a stronger America for future generations.

Here in Congress, as Chairman of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, I'm working with my colleagues in the Congressional Black Caucus to create jobs, renew unemployment benefits, and pass comprehensive immigration reform. Together, we are working to ensure our minority communities have an opportunity to achieve the American Dream.

This Black History Month, I encourage you to join me in learning more and celebrating the role African Americans have played in shaping our great nation."
