WASHINGTON, D.C.- Today, Chair of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC) Nanette Barragán issued a statement on the Supreme Court’s decision to strike down President Biden’s Student Loan Forgiveness Plan – which would have forgivenup to $20,000 in student loan debt for 43 million student loan borrowers.
“The Supreme Court’s decision today to strike down President Biden’s student loan debt forgiveness program is devastating to millions of student loan borrowers across the country who are saddled with student loan debt.” said Chair Barragán.
“For millions of minority students, higher education is a pathway to the middle class, yet a third of Latinos do not feel confident that they can pay off their student loan debt in the next ten years. Low-income households and Black and Latino households statistically have more burdensome debt, leading to a concentration of higher delinquency.
An affordable, high-quality education must be accessible so that students can better provide for themselves and their families and contribute to our vibrant workforce. This decision may be a setback, but the CHC will continue the fight to ensure every student can attain an education without facing unjustifiable financial burdens.”
