CHC Chair Barragán Statement on 23rd Year Since the September 11th Attacks
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congresswoman Nanette Barragán (CA-44), Chair of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC), issued the following statement in remembrance of all the innocent lives lost during the September 11th, 2001, attacks.
"Twenty-three years ago today, our nation faced an unimaginable tragedy as terrorists took the lives of nearly 3,000 innocent people and injured over 6,000 others in one of the darkest moments in American history. This somber day forever altered the course of our nation.
Among the casualties, 9% were Latino men and women. They included executives, construction workers, maintenance staff, first responders, restaurant employees, as well as loving mothers, fathers, sons, and daughters who never made it home. Many of these brave individuals, like Dennis Mojica, a lieutenant in the New York City Fire Department, selflessly put the well-being of others before their own, paying the ultimate price. Their courage serves as a lasting reminder of the sacrifices Latinos made on that tragic day.
We also reflect on the many undocumented immigrants, many of them Latino, whose lives were lost but who were not formally recognized due to their immigration status. Their families faced the heartbreaking challenge of proving the existence of loved ones who worked at the World Trade Center, even as they lived in the shadows.
Each of these brave souls, like all who were affected by the attack, had a story, a legacy, and loved ones they left behind. Their memories live on, and we will never forget them.
Today, let us pause to honor and remember all the victims of September 11th."
