CHC Chair and Leadership Statement on Recent Anti-Democratic Actions in Guatemala

November 21, 2023

Washington D.C. — Today, Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC) Chair Nanette Barragán and CHC leadership released the following statement in response to Public Ministry officials moving to strip Guatemalan president-elect Bernardo Arévalo of his immunity from prosecution:

“The Congressional Hispanic Caucus stands with the Guatemalan people who have made their voices heard and want their rightfully elected president to assume office. As members, we represent thousands of asylum seekers who found a life here they could not build in Guatemala. The ongoing efforts of the Guatemalan attorney general’s office to undermine Guatemala’s democracy and the peaceful transfer of power remain unacceptable. We reject the office’s recent effort to strip President-elect Bernardo Arévalo, Vice President-elect Karin Herrera, and others of their legal immunity. This is part of a flagrant effort by the corrupt few in Guatemala to prevent Arévalo from assuming office, and we oppose their blatant anti-democratic actions.”
