CHC Chair and Leadership Statement on Efforts to Undermine the Peaceful Transfer of Power in Guatemala
Washington D.C. — Today, Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC) Chair Nanette Barragán and CHC leadership issued the following statement regarding ongoing efforts by Guatemala's Public Ministry to undermine the transfer of power to President-elect Bernardo Arévalo:
“We are deeply concerned about escalating efforts in Guatemala to block the peaceful transition of power to President-elect Arévalo. This anti-democratic behavior undermines the will of the people and Guatemala's democratic institutions. The CHC supports those seeking to safeguard democracy and the rule of law in Guatemala.
“The CHC urges all Guatemalans including the outgoing President, the Guatemalan Congress, the private sector, and civil society organizations to work together with the democratically-elected new administration to ensure the democratic process and peaceful transition of power is guaranteed. The Guatemalan people have spoken, and their voice must be respected.”
