Chairman Hinojosa Statement on the Celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month

September 16, 2013

Washington, D.C. – Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC) Chairman Rubén Hinojosa (TX-15) released the following statement in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, which began Sunday:

“Hispanic Heritage Month is a time when all of America can celebrate the accomplishments, contributions and diversity of the 50 million Hispanic Americans living in the United States.

The Hispanic community is an integral part of our country's rich history and economic well being. According to most recent data Hispanic-owned businesses have generated $351 billion in economic output towards the U.S. economy, along with creating 1.9 million jobs.

Democrats in Congress continue to work hard to improve the lives of America’s Hispanic community. Our top priority is enactment of comprehensive immigration reform, which secures our borders, protects our workers, unites our families, and offers hardworking immigrants an earned pathway to citizenship.

We are also committed to creating jobs and strengthening economic growth – a critical agenda for America’s Hispanic community. We are fighting for such initiatives as rebuilding America’s infrastructure, strengthening American manufacturing, investing in community colleges to train American workers in the skills that today’s employers need, and providing incentives for small businesses to grow and hire.

This Hispanic Heritage month let us also focus on the successful implementation of the Affordable Care Act, which is vital to the Hispanic community. Don't forget beginning October 1st, the 10.2 million Hispanics who are currently uninsured will have new access to affordable, quality private health plans.

Finally join me in celebrating all that Hispanics contribute and the ever evolving American Dream which so many of us exemplify."
