Chair Espaillat Denounces ICE Arrest of a New York Public School Student

Washington, D.C. – CHC Chairman Rep. Adriano Espaillat (NY-13) issued the following statement following the detention of Dylan, a New York City public school student, by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

“The Trump administration's obsession with reaching 1 million deportations has gone too far,” said Espaillat.

“The United States government promised Dylan a fair shake – Dylan followed the rules set by our government, enrolled in school to finish his education and showed up to his immigration court appointment.

“This lawless administration's response? To arrest him, label him an 'illegal' and threaten him with expedited removal.

“The Trump administration does not get to rewrite laws based on who it likes and does not like, much less based on an empty campaign promise to deport and terrorize an arbitrary number of people. Asylum applicants like Dylan, especially those who were allowed into the country by the United States government, have the statutory right to have their cases heard in immigration court.

“Our immigration enforcement policy cannot be subject to the whims of a corrupt, unstable White House. If Donald Trump wants to violate his oath of office, that's on him. But every single officer of this United States government swore to protect and defend the Constitution, and we expect them to do just that.”

El Presidente Adriano Espaillat reprueba el arresto de un estudiante del sistema de educación pública de Nueva York por parte de ICE

Washington, D.C. – El Rep. Adriano Espaillat (NY-13), presidente del Caucus Hispano del Congreso (CHC por sus siglas en inglés) emitió el siguiente comunicado respecto de la detención de Dylan, un estudiante del sistema de educación pública de la Ciudad de Nueva York, por parte de Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

“La obsesión de la administración Trump por alcanzar 1 millón de deportaciones ha ido demasiado lejos,” dijo Espaillat.

“El gobierno de los Estados Unidos le prometió a Dylan un trato justo – Dylan siguió las reglas impuestas por nuestro gobierno, se inscribió en la escuela para terminar su educación y se presentó a su cita en la corte de inmigración.

“¿Cuál fue la respuesta de esta administración? Arrestarlo, etiquetarlo de ‘ilegal,’ y amenazarlo con deportación expedita.

“La administración Trump no puede reescribir las leyes basado en quién le cae bien y quién le cae mal, y mucho menos basado en una promesa frívola de campaña de aterrorizar y deportar a un número arbitrario de personas. Los solicitantes de asilo como Dylan, especialmente aquellos a quienes el gobierno de los Estados Unidos les permitió permanecer en el país, tienen el derecho legal de ser oídos en las cortes de inmigración.

“Nuestra política de inmigración no puede estar sujeta a los caprichos de una Casa Blanca corrupta e inestable. Si Donald Trump quiere violar su juramento constitucional, queda en él. Pero todos y cada uno de los oficiales del gobierno de los Estados Unidos juraron proteger y defender la Constitución, y tenemos la expectativa que hagan justamente eso.”
