BECERRA’S APPT TO ‘SUPER COMMITTEE’

August 11, 2011
Washington D.C.: Chairman Charles A. Gonzalez (TX 20) released a statement in response to Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi’s appointment of CHC member Rep. Xavier Becerra to the Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction.
“I commend Leader Pelosi’s decision to appoint Congressman Becerra, former Chairman of the Hispanic Caucus and Vice Chairman of the Democratic Caucus to this important committee and for her steadfast support for many of the issues important to the Latino community throughout the recent debt ceiling negotiations. Congressman Becerra has consistently proven that he is reasonable and understands the struggles of the American middle class.
“While every American would be impacted by the Committee’s plan to reduce the deficit by $1.5 trillion, the Latino community has the most at stake if further cuts are made to programs critical to getting our economy back on track. Latino families have been greatly impacted by the housing crisis and recession, with unemployment rates for our community consistently higher than average. Job creation has always been our top priority and we are eager to deal with the deficit and continue on this greater goal.
“The CHC stands ready to work with the Committee to ensure there is shared sacrifice and responsibility as we work to get Americans back to work.”
