Statement from CHC Chair Barragán on President Claudia Sheinbaum's Historic Inauguration

October 2, 2024

Mexico City, Mexico – Yesterday, Congresswoman Nanette Barragán (CA-44), Chair of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, attended the inauguration of Her Excellency Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, the first woman President of Mexico, as part of a Presidential Delegation led by First Lady Jill Biden.

"I am deeply honored to have been part of the U.S. Presidential Delegation, led by First Lady Jill Biden, to witness the historic inauguration of President Claudia Sheinbaum—Mexico’s first female president.

This is a monumental moment, not only for Mexico, but for all women around the globe. As a proud Latina whose parents immigrated to the United States from Mexico, and Chair of the largest Congressional Hispanic Caucus in history, this occasion fills me with pride. As I personally congratulated President Sheinbaum after the ceremony, I was filled with hope for future generations.

President Sheinbaum is an example for women and girls in Mexico and Latinas throughout the Americas of what we can accomplish and proof that we belong at the highest levels of government.

Thank you to President Biden for appointing me to represent our nation, and the U.S. Congress, on such a remarkable occasion. The deep ties between Mexico and the U.S. go beyond diplomacy—our shared history and culture unite us. I look forward to continuing the work between our nations to build a more prosperous and secure future.

President Sheinbaum’s leadership is an inspiring testament to the power of women, and I am excited for the bright future that lies ahead.”
