CHC Chair Barragán Statement on Rep. Tony Cárdenas Retirement Announcement
WASHINGTON, DC — Today, Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC) Chair Nanette Barragán (CA-44) issued the following statement in response to an announcement by CHC Vice Chair of Member Engagement Tony Cárdenas stating that he will not seek another term in the U.S. House of Representatives.
“For nearly three decades, Rep. Cárdenas has been a fearless advocate for working-class families and immigrant communities at the local, state, and national level of government. In Congress, he has been a relentless champion of juvenile justice and mental health equity – leading the passage of legislation including the bipartisan At-Risk Youth Medicaid Protect Act, which would keep young American Medicaid recipients from losing health coverage if they come into contact with the criminal justice system, as well as several policies to expand access to mental health services and crisis care.
Rep. Cárdenas has also been front and center in the CHC’s battle to make building the National Museum of the American Latino on the National Mall a reality. His leadership has undoubtedly moved us closer to one day celebrating Latino history in the heart of our nation’s capital alongside the collection of renowned Smithsonian museums.
He shattered glass ceilings by becoming the first Latino to represent the San Fernando Valley in the House of Representatives, and he has been unwavering in his commitment to increase Latino representation across all levels of government.
Rep. Cárdenas’ ardent efforts to advance policies that put people over politics ensures his legacy will be felt for decades to come. The CHC will be forever grateful to him for his tireless dedication to elevating Latinos, and we look forward to serving alongside him for the remainder of this term. Gracias por todo, Congresista.”
