September 26, 2024

Washington D.C. – Today, Congresswoman Nanette Barragán (CA-44), Chair of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC), released a statement after the White House announced that she will be part of the official Presidential Delegation, led by First Lady Jill Biden, to travel to Mexico City for the inauguration of President-Elect Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo—the first woman elected to Mexico’s presidency.

"As Chair of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, it is a true honor to join First Lady Jill Biden and the Presidential Delegation as we represent the United States at this historic inauguration," said Chair Barragán. "Mexico is not only a key partner and ally but also the ancestral homeland of nearly 40 million Latinos in the United States. The CHC has consistently worked to strengthen our bilateral ties and highlight that the collaboration between our nations is essential to solve the challenges we face together—whether in trade, migration, or climate resilience. President-Elect Sheinbaum Pardo's leadership represents a new chapter in our partnership, built on over 200 years of shared history.

As fellow members of the Presidential Delegation, Secretary of Health and Human Services Xavier Becerra, Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas, and U.S. Ambassador to Mexico Ken Salazar have played crucial roles in the CHC’s work to shape U.S. policies that strengthen the U.S./Mexico partnership.

With so many families in the U.S. that trace their roots back to Mexico, our relationship is more than just diplomatic—it's deeply personal for millions of Americans. Very soon, our Presidential Delegation will celebrate a historic milestone alongside First Lady Jill Biden and begin our work with President-Elect Sheinbaum Pardo to continue to advance critical work that benefits both our nations."
